Vidya Balan is a Bollywood Actress, was born on 1 January 1978 in Ottapalam, Kerala, India. Vidya Balan made her acting debut with Bengali film, Bhalo Theko in 2003. She made her debut in Bollywood debut with Parineeta in 2005 for which she won Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut and her first Best Actress nomination. Vidya Balan is recently in news foe her much awaited film “The Dirty Picture” in which she played real life character of yesteryear South Indian actress Silk Smitha.

Early Life

Vidya Balan was born on 1st January 1978 in Palakkad, Kerala. Balan family shifted to Mumbai when she was a child. She studied in St. Anthony’s school. Vidya graduated in Sociology from St. Xavier’s College. She then enrolled for Masters in Arts from Mumbai University.

She has also studied and performed in Prithvi Theatres’ workshops. Due to tradition of most Tamil-Iyer families Vidya learnt Karnatic dance but left after sometime as the classes were held every Sunday morning and Vidya was not an early riser.

Early Career

From, 1998 onwards, she appeared in numerous television ads, many of which were directed by Pradeep Sarkar. She made her debut, as a model in Surf excel advertisement. She appeared in music videos of Euphoria, Shubha Mudgal and Pankaj Udas. Vidya also appeared in two TV serials Ekta Kapoor’s Hum Paanch and Ashok Pandit’s Hanste Khelte.

Vidya Balan’s acting career started when she signed up for the Malayalam film CHAKRAM (2003), alongside Mohanlal but the film was shelved. After that she signed on for the Tamil film, RUN (2002), but for reasons undisclosed, she was dropped after a first schedule and replaced by Meera Jasmine. When CHAKRAM (2003) was restarted with Prithviraj in the lead, Meera Jasmine was chosen ahead of Vidya again.

2003

Vidya Balan made her acting debut in the Bengali film, BHALO THEKO (2003). The film also stars Soumitra Chatterjee, Joy Sengupta, Debshankar Haldar, Parambrata Chatterjee, Rimjhim Gupta, Souvik Poyra, Anusua Majumdar, Bijay Laxmi Barman, and Chandan Sengupta. The movie was based on Leena Gangopadhaya’s story Janmadin. The film was directed by Gautam Halder. It was a success at the box office.

2005

Vidya Balan made her Bollywood debut with PARINEETA (2005) opposite Saif Ali Khan and Sanjay Dutt. Vidya was approached by Vidhu Vinod Chopra during a pop concert in Mumbai to play a lead role in PARINEETA (2005). She was a quintessence of an Indian woman. Her performance earned her a Filmfare Best Female Debut Award, as well as her first Filmfare Award for Best Actress nomination. The star cast also included, Raima Sen, Dia Mirza and Sanyasachi Chakraborty. The film was directed by Pradeep Sarkar and was an adaptation of the Bengali NOVELLA (1914). It primarily revolves around the lead characters Lalita and Shekhar. Since childhood they were friends and slowly this friendship blossoms into love. A series of misunderstanding surface and both of them are separated by Shekhar’s father. The plot deepens when Girish supports Lolita’s family. Eventually, Shekhar’s love defies his father’s greed and he seeks Lolita. It was a blockbuster hit.

2006

Vidya Balan got her first commercial success with Rajkumar Hirani’s LAGE RAHO MUNNA BHAI (2006) opposite Sanjay Dutt. The film also stars Arshad Warsi, Dilip Prabhavalkar, Boman Irani, Dia Mirza, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Saurabh Shukla, Abhishek Bachchan, Jimmy Shergill, Parikshit Sahni and Ninad Kamat. The film is the sequel of MUNNA BHAI M.B.B.S (2004). The film is produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Sanjay Dutt plays a Mumbai underworld don, who begins to see the spirit of Mahatma Gandhi. Through his interaction with the image of Gandhi, Munna Bhai begins to practice what he calls Gandhigiri to help ordinary people to solve their problems. Vidya Balan played the role of Janhavi, a radio jockey, who Munna Bhai falls in love with. It was a success in the box office.

2007

Mani Ratnam’s GURU (2007) was Balan’s first release in 2007. She played Mithun Chakraborty’s granddaughter .The film’s lead pair was Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan. The film also starred Mithun Chakraborty, R. Madhavan, Arya Babbar, Roshan Seth and Mallika Sherawat. The film is an Indian Political Thriller. It was the first Indian film to have a mainstream international premiere in Canada. It was a success at the box office.

Vidya’s next two releases were SALAAM-E-ISHQ: A TRIBUTE TO LOVE (2007) and EKLAVYA: THE ROYAL GUARD (2007). SALAAM-E-ISHQ (2007) was directed by Nikhil Advani. Vidya Balan was cast opposite John Abraham. She played the role of a news reporter Tehzeeb Hussain, who loses her memory in a train accident and forgets her lover. The film also stars Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor, Akshaye Khanna, Juhi Chawla, Govinda, Sonali Bandre, Priyanka Chopra, Sohail Khan, Ayesha Takia, Perizaad Zorabian, Anjana Sukhani and Shannon Esrechowitz. The movie weaves a number of love stories. It was a disaster at the box office.

Her next release was EKLAVYA: THE ROYAL GUARD (2007). The film was directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. It stars Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Saif Ali Khan, Sharmila Tagore, Jackie Shroff and Raima Sen. The film is about Eklavya, a royal guard who is getting old and becoming increasingly blind. But his sole duty is to protect the members of the royal family and he’ll do all he can to do so. The film was selected as India’s official entry to the Oscar’s for the 80th Academy Awards. It failed to do well at the box office.

Vidya Balan’s last two releases of the year, HEYY BABYY (2007) and BHOOL BHULAIYAA (2007), were both commercial films. HEYY BABYY (2007) was the directorial debut of Sajid Khan. The star cast includes Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, Fardeen Khan, Boman Irani and Anupam Kher. Shahrukh Khan was seen in e a guest appearance in a song. The film revolves around the three bachelors who unexpectedly discover the joys of fatherhood when a baby is left at their doorstep. Vidya Balan played the baby’s mother. .HEYY BABYY (2007) was a hit at the box office.

Next Vidya was seen in BHOOL BHULAIYAA (2007) the remake of the critically acclaimed MANICHITRATHAZHU (1993). The film also stars Akshay Kumar, , Ameesha Patel, Shiney Ahuja, Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav, Manoj Joshi, Vineeth, Asrani, Tareena Patel, Rasika Joshi, Vikram Gokhale and Kaveri Jha. Vidya Balan played the role of Avni, who suffers from Dissociative Identity Disorder, where a person has multiple identities. It is a psychological thriller comedy horror film by Priyadarshan. It was a success at the box office.

2008

HALLA BOL (2008) was Vidya’s first release of this year. This film stars Ajay Devgan, Lakh Tandon, Pankaj Kapoor, Ishteyak, Darshan Jariwala, Anjan Srivastav and Sanjay Mishra. The film was directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and produced by Sameer Siddiqui. It is the true life tale of a super star Samir Khan, played by Ajay Devgn a small town boy who has always had aspirations to make it big in tinsel town. After much struggle he gets a break in Bollywood and goes up to become a huge action hero. Vidya Balan was seen as Ajay Devgn’s wife. The film was a failure at the box office.

Vidya’s next release of this year was KISMET KONNECTION (2008). This film’s star cast includes Shahid Kapoor, Juhi Chawla, Vishal Malhotra, Boman Irani, Manoj Bohra and Om Puri. Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan is the narrator in this film. The film was directed by Aziz Mirza. It was produced by Ramesh. S. Taurani under the banner of Tips Industries. KISMET KONNETION (2008) is said to be inspired by the Hollywood film JUST MY LUCK (2006). It was an average film at the box office.

2009

In 2009, Vidya Balan played the role of Vidya, a young independent gynecologist who is also a single mother struggling with her 12 year old son suffering from Progeria Syndrome in PAA (2009).The film also stars Abhishek Bachchan, Amitabh Bachchan Arundhati Nag and Paresh Rawal. . PAA (2009) is directed by R. Balakrishnan. It is based on the rare genetic condition and emphasis on a father-son respectively. The film was released worldwide. Vidya won the Filmfare Award for the Best Actress for PAA (2009). It was a hit at the box office.

2010

Vidya’s first release of this year was ISHQIYA (2010). This film stars Naseeruddin Shah, Arshad Warsi, Salman Shahid, Anupama Kumar, Gauri Malla, Adil Khandakar, Alok Kumar, Anisa Bano and Jai Singh. It was directed by debutant Abhishek Chaubey and produced by Raman Maroo and Vishal Bharadwaj. It performed much better than expected at the box office. Expectations for the film were low, and it opened to a below average opening. However, due to strong word-of-mouth, the film picked up in many places and sustained well. The film was declared an average performer at the box office. It was also selected to be screened at the 34th Cairo International Film Festival

Personal Life

Vidya Balan’s father is P.R.Balan who is the Vice-President of ETC Channel. Vidya’s mother is a home maker. She has an elder sister Priya.

Vidya Balan was an ardent fan of Shahrukh Khan in her school days. She is religious and ardent devotee of Shri Sai Baba.
